Francis Thackeray

Professor Francis Thackeray is a palaeontologist with interests in human evolution and climatic change.  He majored in zoology and archaeology respectively for BSc and BSc (Hons) degrees at the University of Cape Town, where he also obtained a MSc in environmental studies before undertaking a PhD in anthropology at Yale University in the USA (1984).  Subsequently he quantified palaeoclimatic change for various Quaternary sequences in southern Africa while based at the University of Stellenbosch and the Transvaal Museum.  He served as Head of the Department of Palaeontology and Palaeo-Environmental Studies at the Transvaal Museum before becoming Director of the museum until 2009, when he became Director of the Institute for Human Evolution at the University of the Witwatersrand.
